Equine Insurance for Horse Owners
Horse people insuring horse people.
Why Work With a Local Equine Insurance Agent?
A useful insurance conversation should not begin with explaining basic horse terminology. Brianna Schneider and the Culp Agency team understand that a horse's discipline, use, age and medical history can change the insurance conversation.
The agency also brings more than a century of local history in Grand Ledge and decades of insurance experience to the process. When you submit an equine insurance request, it goes to the Grand Ledge office, where Brianna or another member of the team will review it and follow up by phone, text or email.
A Trusted Equine Underwriting Partner
The Culp Agency works with Bascule because its team is focused on equine insurance and understands the people and animals behind the policy. Bascule's underwriters have equine backgrounds themselves, so owners and agents can discuss a horse without first translating the basics.
Culp works with the horse owner, gathers the information, explains the coverage options and works with Bascule on underwriting. The goal is a straightforward process with clear answers from people who know horses and insurance.
What Information Do I Need for an Equine Insurance Quote?
The form below asks for information about you and your horse, including breed, age, sex, use, location, value, veterinary history, previous claims and the types of coverage you want to explore. Coverage options include Equine Mortality Insurance, Major Medical with Coinsurance, Major Medical without Coinsurance and Colic Coverage.
Our form will give our team a useful starting point for a recommendation and quote. Submitting the form does not bind insurance or guarantee coverage.
Start With the Horse
A trail horse, hunter/jumper, barrel horse, broodmare, dressage horse and racehorse do not all present the same insurance questions. Age, use, value, health history and prior claims can all affect the coverage available.
Our equine insurance form gives our team the information they need to understand the horse, review the available options and work with the underwriter on a recommendation and quote. You do not need to know exactly what coverage you want before you begin.
Equine Mortality Insurance
Equine mortality insurance is often compared with life insurance for a horse. It can pay the horse's insured value when a covered accident, injury, illness or disease results in death or when humane destruction is required under the terms of the policy.
Harry O. Culp Agency works with Bascule Underwriting for equine coverage. Bascule focuses on horses and offers Full Mortality coverage along with major medical, surgical and colic options.
What Is Included With Bascule Full Mortality Coverage?
For eligible horses, Bascule Full Mortality coverage includes mortality and theft protection, Wobbler Syndrome coverage and a 90-day loss extension. It also includes emergency colic surgery coverage of up to $5,000, or half the insured value of the horse, whichever is less.
The included emergency colic benefit has no deductible and no co-pay. Mortality coverage is available for qualifying horses from 24 hours old through age 23, with requirements and available endorsements varying by age, value, health history and use.
All coverage is subject to policy terms, conditions, exclusions and underwriting approval.
Equine Major Medical Insurance
Mortality insurance protects the insured value of the horse. Equine major medical insurance is designed to help with eligible veterinary expenses resulting from covered accidents, illnesses, injuries and other medical conditions.
Bascule offers major medical options with and without coinsurance. Coverage limits, deductibles, coinsurance, diagnostic limits, sublimits and exclusions vary by product, so the best fit depends on the horse and the type of protection the owner wants.
The Culp team can help explain the differences before you choose a policy.
Colic Coverage
Bascule Full Mortality policies include emergency colic surgery coverage for eligible horses from 31 days through age 23. The included benefit provides up to $5,000, or half the horse's insured value, whichever is less, with no deductible or co-pay.
Additional colic coverage may also be available for qualifying horses, including coverage that can apply to medical treatment as well as surgery. If colic coverage is one of your priorities, include that on the form so the available options can be reviewed with you.
How Is a Horse's Insured Value Determined?
The purchase price is often the starting point, but a horse's current value may also reflect training, development, breeding value, recent comparable sales or other documented factors. Bascule writes mortality coverage on an agreed-value basis, so the insured value is established during underwriting and shown on the policy.

Can Older Horses Get Equine Mortality Insurance?
They may be able to. Bascule offers mortality coverage for qualifying horses through age 23, although older horses may require additional veterinary documentation and some medical or surgical options may be more limited.
Do not assume an older horse is automatically ineligible. Submit the horse's information and the Culp team can determine what the underwriter requires.
Does My Horse Need a Veterinary Exam?
Not every horse needs the same documentation. Depending on the horse's age, value, health history and requested coverage, underwriting may require an application, Declaration of Health, Veterinary Certificate, veterinary records or other information.
You do not need to gather everything before starting the process. Complete the form with the information you have, and the Culp team can let you know what additional documentation is needed.

What If My Horse Has Had Colic, Lameness or Another Medical Condition?
Include it on the form. A previous illness, injury, surgery, colic episode, lameness issue or other medical condition may affect coverage, exclusions or documentation requirements, but underwriting is based on the individual horse and its history.
An accurate health history gives the agency and underwriter the information they need to evaluate the available coverage. It also reduces the chance of confusion later in the process.
