Equine Insurance for Mid-Michigan Horse Owners
Horse people insuring horse people. That is the approach I wanted when we decided to add equine insurance at Harry O. Culp Insurance Agency.
I’m a rider and horse enthusiast myself, so I know these conversations are different from most other insurance conversations. A trail horse, hunter/jumper, barrel horse, broodmare, dressage horse and racehorse do not all present the same questions, and our team wants to understand the horse first.
We are now working with Bascule Underwriting to offer equine mortality, major medical and colic coverage to horse owners in Grand Ledge, Lansing and throughout Mid-Michigan. Local veterinarians have also referred horse owners to us when they need help finding coverage, and we take that trust seriously.
Equine Insurance Starts With the Horse
Age, use, value, health history and prior claims can all affect the coverage available. We start by learning about the horse and what the owner wants to protect, then we work with the underwriter to review the available options and determine what information is needed.
You do not need to know exactly what coverage you want before you contact us. If you can tell us about the horse, we can start there.
Equine Mortality Insurance
Equine mortality insurance is often compared with life insurance for a horse. It can pay the horse’s insured value when a covered accident, injury, illness or disease results in death or when humane euthanasia is required under the terms of the policy.
Through Bascule, Full Mortality coverage is available for eligible horses and includes mortality and theft protection. It also includes Wobbler Syndrome coverage, a 90-day loss extension and emergency colic surgery coverage of up to $5,000, or half the horse’s insured value, whichever is less.
Even better, the included emergency colic benefit has no deductible and no co-pay. Coverage is subject to policy terms, conditions, exclusions and underwriting approval.
Coverage for Foals Through Older Horses
Bascule offers mortality coverage for qualifying horses from 24 hours old through age 23. The information required can vary depending on the horse’s age, insured value, health history and the coverage being requested.
Some horses may need a Declaration of Health, Veterinary Certificate, veterinary records or other documentation. We can review the horse’s information and let you know what the underwriter needs before you spend time gathering paperwork that may not be necessary.
Major Medical and Colic Coverage
Horse owners can also ask us about major medical coverage with or without coinsurance, along with additional colic coverage. These options can differ in deductibles, coinsurance, coverage limits, sublimits and exclusions.
We can walk through those differences with you after we know more about the horse. The goal is not to pick a policy from a list, but to understand what is available and what might best fit your budget.
Working With People Who Know Horses
A useful insurance conversation should not begin with explaining basic horse terminology. Our team understands that discipline, use, age, value and medical history can change the conversation from one horse to the next.
We work directly with Bascule’s equine-focused underwriters and help gather the information needed for a quote. Requests come through our Grand Ledge office, and we follow up by phone, text or email.
Tell Us About Your Horse
If you are interested in equine mortality, major medical or colic coverage, start with our equine insurance quote form. We ask about the horse’s age, breed, use, value, health history and previous claims so we have a solid starting point.
Submitting the form does not bind coverage or guarantee that insurance will be available. It gives us what we need to begin the conversation and work through the next steps with you.
